Staying in Lisbon

Baixa and Chiado put shops, restaurants and many historic sights within easy reach, with strong metro access. They suit a first visit, although central stays can be busy and more expensive.

Alfama offers atmospheric lanes and a historic setting, but its steep streets, steps and limited car access matter when travelling with luggage. Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real suit dining and lively evenings; choose carefully if quiet nights are important.

Avenida da Liberdade and Marquês de Pombal are calmer, well connected by metro and practical for exploring beyond the old centre. Tip: In hilly Lisbon, compare the nearest metro stop, the uphill walk from it and air conditioning—not just the neighbourhood name.
